I spent the night first at the movies and later in front of the boob tube in an apartment where this single guy indulges in awesome pay-per-view titles but always sacks out on the couch around eleven thirty. I discovered him a couple of weeks ago by accident, and I didn’t have anything else planned tonight, so I went over to his place to watch TV. From my position in front of the premium-television programming, I could also see through the window that there had been a multiple-car pileup in the fog out on the A1. So I gadded around over there a while, watching the scene, but no one died. That would have been too convenient. Most often, people quietly peter out alone in their apartments, and then their souls zoom away, so I never get a chance to chat them up. That’s what keeps drawing me back to accidents and disasters of all kinds. I’d actually encountered a few souls this way, but not once had anyone spoken to me. They always zoomed single-mindedly past me, seemingly unaware of my presence.

I arrived at Martin’s apartment shortly before the punctual ringing of his alarm, zoomed through the apartment’s front door, and felt a very unpleasant tingling in the front hallway. The metal plates in the hallway were plugged into the outlet and had several hundred volts surging through them. I was pissed off. Martin was really trying every means conceivable to banish me from his life. However, he had not thought all this through to its logical conclusion. Although I was still kind of stuck in my former earthly habits, such as coming into his apartment through the front door, it’s not like I had to come in that way. I could just as well walk or fly in, or however you want to describe it, through windows, walls, roofs, and even people, and I decided to immediately start coming through his living room window, thus rendering his groovy Ghostbuster gate pointless.

I was going to whisper that in his ear right now, even before the soft beeping of his alarm started. I zoomed into the bedroom—but immediately recoiled. Martin was not alone. Birgit was lying beside him. Her blonde hair covered her face, and a single hair was blowing up and down to the rhythm of her breathing. Apart from the natural hair on her head and body, she was naked.

I couldn’t believe it.

The two of them had screwed.

In secret!

“Did you screw her?” I asked Martin, ignoring our usual morning greeting ritual.

He grumbled vaguely.

“DID YOU TWO HAVE SEX?”

“Shut up,” mumbled Martin.

“Did you say something?” Birgit asked.

“Good morning.” He beamed at her, she beamed at him—Martin’s beaming made perfect sense to me.

“How was it?” I asked.

“You’d better pull something on,” Martin said.

“What for?” Birgit mumbled, stretching cozily.

“Because we’ve got a peeping Tom in the bedroom who lacks even a flicker of decency,” he thought toxically in my direction.

“So you don’t catch a cold.” He tossed her his fleecy pajamas with blue-and-white horizontal stripes.
